the Gorton family

Second Generation (Great Grandparents)

Silas George Gorton

Born 29 jan 1874  at 86 Stanhope St; father Silas Theophilus Gorton, home decorator, mother Catherine Victoria Gorton, formerly Rebbeck. (source birth certificate)

25.7.1894 Married Emily Elizabeth Hill at the Register Office in Islington.

At the time of his marriage to Emily, Silas was aged 21, and  living at 8 Blundell Street and his occupation was ‘Carman’  His father was listed as Silas Gorton, deceased, whose occupation was ‘House painter’. Emily was aged 20 years, of 12 Georges Yard and her father was James Hill, carman.  Witnesses were C Hill (Caroline?) and K Gorton (Kate?).  (source marriage certificate)

Emily Elizabeth Hill

Emily Hill was born 9 dec 1877 at 93 Banceton St, Islington, father James Hill, mother Caroline Hill (formerly Ridgewell). Father’s occupation Carman.  (source Birth certificate)

Emily married Silas George GORTON on 25 Jul 1894 (see above).

Emily Elizabeth Gorton died on 29 Oct 1963 in Rochford General Hospital, Essex, aged 87 years.  The cause of death was Cerebral arteriosclerosis.  Her address was 11 Oban Road, Southend on Sea, Essex and the death was reported by her son Tom (source death certificate DR)

The picture shows Emily Gorton (seated) with daughters Rose (right) and Emily Kate and grandson Tony, shortly after he had recovered from pneumonia.  Rose died just a few months after this photo was taken.

A note about Emily Elizabeth Hill:  There is some confusion over Emily’s true age at the time of marriage – and therefore the accuracy of her date of birth. My view is that Emily was actually only 16 when she married Silas, and they gave an incorrect age to avoid any complications at the marriage.

However, there was another Emily Elizabeth Hill, born in Southwark on 21 august 1876 (father George Hill (deceased), mother Emily Rushforth). This Emily was initially raised by her mother's uncle - Frederick Rushforth - in Saffron Walden, but my cousin DR who knows much more about the Gortons than me, has a theory that she later moved to London where she was adopted by James and Caroline.  Watch this space for the result of our investigations!
