George Mason

Born about 1770 at Orton, Westmorland (according to census information).  According to his daughter Sarah's marriage certificate, in 1841 George Mason was a discharged soldier.

George Mason served in the 44thRegiment of Foot under General Charles Rainsford. According to the Muster Rolls and Pay Lists[WO12/5640]in 1800 and 1801, he was stationed at Gibraltar, Malta, Marmorice Bay, and at a camp near Alexandria.(sourceNational Archives, Kew)keep checking rest of entries.

A soldier's pay in those days was not great: at the beginning of the year 1800, George was earning £1:1:11½ for a 31 day month (only £1:1:3 if there were just 30 days in the month) but times must have got hard, because by the time they arrived in Malta at the end of October 1800, the pay had dropped to just 15s 16d a month and remained at that level right through till the end of 1801!

He was discharged due to blindness on 4thJune 1804 aged29 years, having served in the 44thRegiment for either5 or 10 years (there is a discrepancy in the discharge papers) and recommended to receive His Majesty’s Royal Bounty of Chelsea Hospital. He was born in Culton or Oulton in Westmorland.[WO121/71/171]
