In Rev. W Nicholls' 1877 book 'History & Traditions of Ravenstonedale, Westmorland' there is a translation (dated 1723) of the 1541 conveyance of the farms and tenements of Ravenstonedale by King Henry VIII, in the 32nd year of his reign - first of all to the Archbishop of York, and six years subsequently, after the death of the Archbishop, to Sir Thomas Lord Wharton. It gives a list of land-holders of the dale (about 194 names) and the number of acres they possessed. The list includes the surnames ADAMTHWAITE, FUTHERGILL, HUNTER and ROBINSON. (source MY)

It seems likely that all the Adamthwaites found across the world originate from a small farm in Ravonstonedale, Westmorland – the Pipe Roll of Cumbria (1278) mentions an AdamThwayt (source EA) In 1777 the following householders paid window tax:
