Second Generation (great grandparents)

William Johnson (1864- )

Born 16 May 1864 at Towersey, In Buckinghamshire.  His father was George Johnson, farm labourer and his mother Eliza Johnson, formerly Chapman of Towersey. (source Birth Certificate)

William Johnson married Norah Williams on 26 Feb 1894 at the Parish Church Thame, Oxfordshire. At time of his marriage, William Johnson was a labourer, (father George Johnson, bricklayer of Thame), he married Norah Williams, widow nee O’Shaughnessy of Thame (father John O’Shaughnessy, occ Tailor).  Witnesses were C Rust and Elizabeth Horland (source Marriage Certificate)

Norah (Nora) Williams (nee O’Shaunessy)

Born Wexford in Ireland in about 1860, father John O’Shaughnessy, Tailor.  Her first marriage was to … Williams and they had a son John, born in Warwick in about 1888.

In 1901 census, the Johnson family lived at 6 Caroline Terrace, St Clement, Oxford [RG13/1380 f77]:

  • William Johnson, age 35, Bricklayers Labourer, born in Oxon Towersea (now spelt Towersey)

  • Norah Johnson, age 41 born Ireland

  • John Williams, (son of Norah Johnson) age 13, printers apprentice, born Warwick

  • William Johnson, age 6, born Thame

  • Nellie Johnson, age 6, born Thame

  • George Johnson, age 3, born Thame 

 In the 1920s the family was living in High Street, New Headington, Oxford

Children Of William and Norah Johnson:

twins William and Nellie Johnson (born 21 dec 1894 at Thame), [1895 mar thame 3a, 83]

George Johnson, born about 1898 [?1897 dec thame 3a, 857] – He was a Petty Officer in the Marines in WWI. Soon after his brother William moved to Wales, George followed and also worked at Duffryn Yard as a fireman.  He married Edith Pitt from Bargoed and they had three children – Vincent (died in infancy), Kenny (who lived in Castle Street most of his life, married Monica and had three children Patricia, Kevin and Bernadette) and Gordon.

Nora Johnson, (a Nora Johnson was born [1906 dec headington 3a, 1026] married … Rowles and had a son Billy

Ethel Johnson (an Ethel Johnson was born [1903 mar, Headington 3a, 992] lived in Rose Hill in Oxford

Thomas Dearl(e)

He must have been born before 1877 – we think in Clontarf, near Dublin. He married Annie before 1895 and they lived in Brian Boru Street in Clontarf.

Tom Dearl was a merchant seaman and fought in WW1, (try National Archives at Kew) when he was gassed.  He died in about 1934 in Ireland. [find death]

Born before  1877 in Ireland and died about 1948 in Clontarf

Tom and Annie Dearl’s children: 

Kathleen, born about 1895 in Clontarf

Tom (ran a Nursing Home with his brother Dickie at 23 Baggott St near the Hospital), Tom was a Sergeant Major in the British Army in the Medical Corps during WWI and after the war he married Jessie in Dublin and they ran the Nursing Home – but she ran off with another man so he had to give up the Nursing Home.  He became a private nurse for the owner of McAlpine Ltd.  He died in about 1960 in Aberavon and his funeral was at St Joseph’s Catholic Church.  [find death]

Christopher (ran a Spa in Dollymount Road, Dublin)

Richard (Dickie), married May.  They had a baby born with a tubucular growth on his spine and tragically,  the whole family died of TB

Maria, married Robert Pryce in Dublin and they had four children: Robert (Bobby), Richard, Mary and  Elizabeth (Lily) (who died aged 15 or 16)

Johnnie, was Chief Caddie Master at Malahide Road Golf Course in Dublin and lived in a cottage in the grounds
