George Johnson

Born  ~1832, bap 17 jul 1832 at St Mary the Virgin in Thame, father John mother Elizabeth (source parish records, ORO) 

Married Eliza Chapman on 29 apr 1861 at the Parish Church in Towersey, Bucks. Marriage certificate states that both George and Eliza were ‘full age’ and living in Towersey.   George’s occupation was labourer, father John Johnson, Coal Dealer.  Eliza’s father was James Chapman, shoemaker.  Witnesses Elizabeth Chapman and Eliza Nelmes (source marriage certificate) 

In the 1861 census, George Johnson was aged 28 and living with his parents at Friday Street in Thame (see next page)

George Johnson died after 1891 and probably before 1901 – possible deaths (from FreeBMD) :

  • 1892 dec age 68 Wycombe 3a, 386

  • 1901 mar age 75 Bradfield 2c, 237

  • 1897 jun age 70 in Windsor 2c, 265

Eliza Chapman

Born ~ 1835 in Towersey.  Father James Chapman, shoemaker of Towersey                                                [find birth or baptism]

Married George Johnson in 1861

In the 1861 census, just before her marriage to George Johnson, Eliza was aged 26, working as a lacemaker and living with her parents James and Esther Chapman  at Upper Green in the village of Towersey (see below)                                                                                                                    

Eliza Johnson died after 1891 – [find death] 

In the 1871 census, the Johnson family were living at Towersey Road Cottages in Thame [RG10/1431 f73]:  

  • George Johnson, age 39, bricklayer, born Thame

  • Eliza Johnson, wife, 36, born Towersey

  • Elizabeth Johnson, 10, scholar, born Towersey

  • Georgina Johnson, 8, scholar, born Towersey

  • William, Johnson, 7, scholar, born Towersey

  • Walter, H Johnson, 5, scholar, born Towersey

  • John Johnson, 1month, born Thame

In 1881 census, the Johnson family were living at no 5 Towersey Road, Thame, Oxford [RG11/1413 f129]:

  • George Johnson, age 50, b. Thame, bricklayer

  • Eliza Johnson, age 48, b. Towersey

  • William Johnson, age 17, b. Towersey, Bricklayer

  • John Johnson (Harry?), age 15, b. Thame, agricultural labourer

  • Esther Johnson, age 7, b. Thame

In 1891 census, the Johnson family were living at Park St, Thame  [RG12/1161 f173] :

  • George Johnson, age 62, b. Thame, Oxon, Bricklayer

  • Eliza Johnson, age 59, b. Towersey, Bucks, laundress

  • William Johnson, age 27, b. Towersey, Bucks, labourer

  • Harry Johnson, age 25, b. Towersey, Bucks, labourer

neither George or Eliza Johnson have been found in the 1901 census - look for their deaths.

Elizabeth Johnson (born~1861  in Towersey

Georgina Johnson (born ~1863) in Towersey

William Johnson (born 16 may 1864 in Towersey)

Walter H Johnson (born ~1866) – is this the child called Harry in 1891 census?)

John Johnson (born ~1871 in Thame) – did he die? There is no sign of him in later censuses.

Esther Johnson (born ~1874 in Thame)

John O’Shaughnessy (father of Norah Williams)

Probably born in Ireland, occupation Tailor        [find out more of this family]
