John Johnson

Born about 1801 in Thame and chr 25 dec 1801 at St Mary the Virgin, Thame, father William Johnson, mother Ann (source parish records, Oxford Record Office) 

John Johnstone, of parish of Thame, married Elizabeth Cadle of the parish of Long Crendon by banns at Long Crendon on 21 aug 1826 at Long Crendon, Bucks.  Witness John Hawkes and Esther Cadle (source parish records Centre for Bucks Studies)

According to the birth certificate of his son Elijah in 1838, John Johnson was an agricultural labourer and his mother was Elizabeth Johnson, former Caddle.

According to the marriage certificate of his son George in 1861, John Johnson was a coal dealer in Towersey

Elizabeth Caudel / Cadell

Born about 1800 in Kimble Bucks (acc to 1861 census). An Elizabeth Cadell was baptised in Little Kimble on 30 feb 1803, daughter of William Cadell and Sarah his wife (source parish records CBS)                                                                                      [find death after 1871]

  • An Elizabeth Johnson died in [1874 mar Thame 3a 414 age 66]

  • An Elizabeth Johnson died in [1876 mar Henley 3a 431 age 78]                 

In the 1841 census, John and Elizabeth Johnson were living at Aylesbury Row, Thame Hundred [HO107/888 f5] :

  • John Johnson, 40, ag lab

  • Elizabeth, 35

  • Thomas, 13

  • Sarah, 11

  • George, 8

  • Jonah, 6

  • Elijah, 3

  • Male nk, 1month

In the 1851 census, Elizabeth was age 49 and a nurse, visiting the household of Benjamin and Elizabeth Johnson in Long Crendon [HO107/1726]  

John was living in Aylesbury Road in Thame with the children:

  • John Johnson, 54

  • Sarah, 21

  • George, 19, labourer

  • Jonah, 17, labourer

  • Elijah, 11

  • Philip, 8

In the 1861 census, John and Elizabeth Johnson were living at Friday Street in Thame :

  • John Johnson,head, 60, coal merchant, born Thame

  • Elizabeth Johnson, wife, 61, born Kimble, Bucks

  • George Johnson, son, 28, bricklayer, born Thame

  • Phillip, son, 20, coal merchants assistant, born Thame

  • George, son (?really) age 7, scholar, born Thame – it is likely this is actually their grandson (see below)

In the 1871 census, John Johnson had died and his widow was living in Aylesbury Road, Thame  [RG10/1431 f59] :

  • Elizabeth Johnson, head, wid, 68, coal merchant, born Bucks Kimble

  • Elijah Johnson, son, unm, 31, coal merchant, born Oxon Thame

John and Elizabeth Johnson’s children (all baptised at St Mary the Virgin in Thame – in most entries father’s occupation is given as labourer  (source parish records ORO):

Thomas Johnson, bap 18 jan 1828

Sarah Johnson, bap 25 aug 1830 –Sarah married Emos Knighton and went to live in Northants: their son George was living with his grandmother Elizabeth Johnson in Thame in the 1871 census.

George Johnson, bap 17 jul 1832 (says father John, mother Elizabeth of Moreton)

Jonah Johnson, bap 31 dec 1834

Elijah Johnson, born 21 oct 1838, bap 25 jun 1841 [1838 dec Thame 16,107] In 1871 census, was living with his widowed mother and working as a coal merchant.

Phillip Johnson, bap 25 jun 1841 [1841 jun Thame 16, 118] this Phillip must have died.

Eliza Ann Johnson, bap 9 sep 1842 [1842 sep Thame 16,106]  

Phillip Johnson, bap  25 jun 1843 in Thame & Watlington Methodist Circuit, aged 1month, 8 days old. (source Bucks BMDs MJ) - in 1861 census was working as a coal merchant

 

James Chapman

Born about 1809, bap 1 oct 1809 at St Catherine’s in Towersey, father William, mother Rebecca (source parish records, ORO)

Married Esther (Hester) Higgins (nee Brown) by banns in 1832 at St Catherine’s in Towersey.  Hesther was a widow, both were ‘of this parish’ Witnesses were Amelia King and George Alnutt (source parish records ORO)

According to his daughters marriage certificate, James Chapman was a Shoemaker in Towersey

A James Chapman died in 1873 in Towersey (from index to burials check record) [1873 sep Thame 3a 367]

Esther Brown (married to James Chapman)

Born ~1808, bap 22 may 1808 (base born) mother Margaret Brown in Towersey

Married to Edward Higgins at Towersey on 17 oct 1827(source parish records Oxon Record Centre) – no children of Esther and Edward were baptised at St Catherine’s between 1827 and 1832.

In 1832 she married James Chapman

An Esther Chapman died in Towersey in 1872 (from index to burialscheck record) [1872 mar Thame 3a 405]

In the 1841 census, at Towersey (HO107/39 ED13 f7):

  • James Chapman, 30, shoemaker, yes

  • Esther Chapman, 30

  • Jabez, 8

  • Eliza, 6

  • Elizabeth, 7m

And next door, was:

  • Abraham Chapman, 70, yes

  • Sarah Collins, 70, yes

 Two doors away:

  • John Chapman, 37, ag lab, yes

  • Sophia Chapman, 29, yes

  • Mary, 9

  • Barbary, 7

  • Jane, 3

  • Joseph, 1

  • Sarah, 2m

In the 1851 census, the Chapmans were living in Towersey (f220):

  • James Chapman, 41, shoemaker, born Towersey

  • Esther, 42, lacemaker, born Towersey

  • Elizabeth, 10, lacemaker, born Towersey (but no mention of Eliza who would have been ~16)

There was an Eliza Chapman, age 18 and born in Towersey, who was working as a servant in the household of Joseph Edwards, victualler of Market Square, Aylesbury [HO107/1721 f322]

In the 1861 census, James and Esther Chapman were living at Upper Green in the village of Towersey:

  • James Chapman, head, 52, cordwainer, born Towersey

  • Esther, wife, 52, lacemaker, born Towersey

  • Eliza, dau, 26, lacemaker, born Towersey

In the 1871 census, they were living in Towersey village (all born in Towersey)  [RG10/1430 f19]:

  • James Chapman, head, mar, 62, pauper,  blind

  • Esther, wife, mar, 63

  • Jabez, son, wid, 38 ag lab

  • Elizabeth, dau unm, 30 (or 36), dom sevant

  • Amos, grandson, 6

Also living in Towersey Brickkiln, very close to James and Esther Chapman, were  [RG10/1430 f19] :

  • John Buckle, head, mar, 56, maltster, born Suffolk Stowmarket

  • Harriet, wife, mar, 55, maltster’s wife, born Suffolk Stratford

  • Debinda, dau, 11, born Stowmarket

  • Lauria Buckle, grandau, 7, born Towersey

  • Ada Chapman, grandau, 3, born Towersey

  • Alice Buckle, dau, 13, born Stowmarket

What is the link with the Buckle family?  This family’s granddaughter Ada may be a granddaughter of James and Esther, or may be related to one of the other Chapman families living in Towersey at the time.

A Joseph Chapman, bach age 24, haycutter of Towersey married Eliza Buckle, spinster, 19 of Towersey on 10 nov 1863 (source Brill and Thame cong. Churches, Eureka Partnership – MJ).  In 1871 they were living at Woodman’s Arms, Princes Risbourough, Bucks [RG10/1409 f101]:

  • Joseph Chapman, head, 31, hay tier, b. Towersey

  • Eliza, wife, 26, b Suffolk Stowmarket

  • Alice, dau, 4, b Towersey

  • Edith, dau, 1 b Towersey

Another link with the Buckles is that on 26 aug 1870, Alfred Buckle (24) married Agnes Caudle Johnson (22) in Long Crendon.  In the 1871 census, Alfred and Agnes Buckle, both b Long Crendon, were living next door to William Johnson, 57, general dealer b Long Crendon and his wife Harriet, 57 lacemaker, also b Long Crendon.  [RG10/1432 f79]                 

Known children of James and Esther Chapman:

No children of James and Esther were recorded as baptised at St Catherine Towersey between 1832 and 1868 – check non-conformist registers – there was a Baptist and Methodist Chapel in Towersey - and Thame however, from census information, we know that they had the following children:

Jabez Chapman – born about 1833 in Towersey.  By the time of the 1871 census, Jabez was aged 38, widowed and living with his parents and his son Amos.  In 1881 Jabez was living alone in Towersey and working as an agricultural labourer, meanwhile his son Amos was working as a butcher’s slaughterman and living in the household of Walter Cottrell, butcher, in Wantage. in 1891 Jabez was aged 58, widowed, an Agricultural Labourer and his son Amos was a butcher, and they were living in Battens Yard in Thame  [RG12/1161 f138].

Eliza Chapman, born about 1835 – married to George Johnson (see previous generation)

Elizabeth Chapman, born about 1841 in Towersey.

NOTE: There were two Jabez Chapmans, both agricultural labourers, both appear in the 1871 census and according to their ages in that census they were born within three years of each other in Towersey:

  • Jabez Chapman, born about 1833, son of James and Esther

  • Jabez Chapman, born about 1836, son of John Chapman (age 75, wid, tailor, in 1871 census)

A Jabez Chapman married in [1874 dec Thame 3a, 1010} – possibly to Jane Church and died [1895 jun Thame 3a 434] age 70.
