What
is the link with the Buckle family?
This family’s granddaughter Ada may be a granddaughter of James and
Esther, or may be related to one of the other Chapman families living in
Towersey at the time. A
Joseph Chapman, bach age 24, haycutter of Towersey married Eliza Buckle,
spinster, 19 of Towersey on 10 nov 1863 (source Brill
and Thame cong. Churches, Eureka Partnership – MJ).
In 1871 they were living at Woodman’s Arms, Princes Risbourough,
Bucks [RG10/1409 f101]:
Another link with the Buckles is that on 26 aug 1870, Alfred Buckle (24) married Agnes Caudle Johnson (22) in Long Crendon. In the 1871 census, Alfred and Agnes Buckle, both b Long Crendon, were living next door to William Johnson, 57, general dealer b Long Crendon and his wife Harriet, 57 lacemaker, also b Long Crendon. children of James and Esther Chapman: No
children of James and Esther were recorded as baptised at St Catherine Towersey
between 1832 and 1868 – check non-conformist
registers – there was a Baptist and Methodist Chapel in Towersey - and Thame –
however, from census information, we know that they had the following
children:
NOTE: There were two Jabez Chapmans, both agricultural
labourers, both appear in the 1871 census and according to their ages in that
census they were born within three years of each other in Towersey:

Jabez Chapman married in [1874 dec Thame 3a, 1010} – possibly to Jane Church
and died [1895 jun Thame 3a 434] age 70.
