the Johnson and Dearl families

Fifth generation (4 x great grandparents)

William Johnson

Born about 1774 (acc to death certificate) in Thame (acc to 1841 census) but baptism not found in Thame parish records. The most likely birth is:

William Johnstone, baptised 13 nov 1768 at Long Crendon, son of Wm and Elizabeth Johnson (source Bucks baptisms, MJ) - [check parish record for more information]

Married to Ann before 1798

Possible marriages - the first one is most likely:

  • William Johnson of Thame married Ann Dobbinson 21 may 1798 at Shabbington.  Witnesses were Catherine Hill, Rebecca Robinson and Susannah Norton. (Bucks Marriage Index, MJ)

  • William Johnson married Ann Carpenter 1 may 1793 at St Mary’s Reading (parish records)

  • William Johnson married Ann Templar 15 may 1786 at Oxford St Giles (both Lodgers of this parish) (parish records) – William would have been too young to marry in 1786

  • William Johnson married Ann Absalom 1 nov 1794 at Shrivenham, Berks (both of this parish) – unlikely as they had a son William, born 1795 in Shrivenham (IGI)

It seems very likely that Ann died sometime after the birth of their daughter Mary in 1810, and that William then married Mary Rush on 21 aug 1818 in Thame and had two more children, one of whom was the Benjamin he was living with in the 1841 census.

William Johnson died on 21 Aug 1848 in Thame.  He was aged 74 years and his occupation was agricultural labourer.  The cause of death was a scalp wound erysipelas 17 days (certified) and the death was reported by Elizabeth Dorsett of Thame, present at the death (source Death Certificate)
