the Mastel and Appleby families

Third Generation (Great Great Grandparents)

Joseph APPLEBY

Born  about 1821, in Bethnal Green, father Charles Appleby wheelwright (acc to Joseph’s marriage certificate)                                         [find birth record]

I have now checked parish records for all Tower Hamlets churches and not managed to find any record of Joseph Appleby's birth - in all the censuses he says he was born in Bethnal Green - if anyone can help me find him, please contact me!.

Only other birth records for a Joseph Appleby found to date are:

  • Joseph Appleby born about 1822 and christened 22 jan 1832 at St Andrew by the Wardrobe, Shoreditch.  Father Joseph Appleby, mother Charlotte Collett.  (source parish records, Guildhall)

  • Joseph Appleby, born 1 oct 1819, bap 5 may 1838 at St Pancras Old Church, father Richard Appleby, Carpenter of Church Way and Ann. (source parish records LMA)

  • Joseph Appleby, b 11 feb 1819, chr 7 mar 1819 at Paternoster Row, Wesleyan Methodist, father John Appleby, mother Hannah Law (Hannah’s parents were William and Hannah Law)  (source Br.Vital Records, FRC)

Joseph married Harriet Nay on 25th dec 1843 at the Parish Church of Hackney (St John’s).  Both were ‘of full age’ and Joseph’s occupation is given as Tin Plate Worker, both lived at London Fields. However on marriage certificate his name is given as John Appleby. His father was Charles (occupation wheelwright).  Harriet’s father was William Nay, carpenter.  The Minister was John Graham and the witnesses John and Sarah Hagerty. (source marriage certificate) .  NOTE: have checked entry in marriage register for St John’s at Hackney – Joseph’s name is certainly recorded as John, however, the vicar had performed 16 marriages on that day, so possibly was getting confused!   Another query is that Harriet’s father William Nay’s occupation is given  as carpenter, whereas in the census he is a silk weaver. [check banns]

Joseph Appleby, occupation tin plate worker, died on Whit Sunday, 13 May 1894 aged 73 years.  The cause of death was ‘revolver shot in head – suicide’. A certificate was received from A Hodgkinson, Acting Coroner for North East London.  The Inquest was held on 16 May 1894.  (source death certificate)

Unfortunately, the inquest report no longer exists (checked LMA), however the inquest was reported in the N E Leader on Saturday 19 May 1894:

SUICIDE OF AN OLD TRADESMAN

Terminates his existence without apparent reason.

Mr Hodgkinson held an inquest at the Vestry Hall, Church Row, Bethnal Green on Wednesday afternoon on the body of Joseph Apleby, an old tradesman of Bethnal Green, whose body was found last Sunday morning shot through the head.

After some evidence, police constable Walton 568 J, deposed that he was called at 10.45 am on Sunday to 28 Cambridge Circus, and he found deceased sitting in a chair with a bullet wound in his right temple.  The revolver (produced) he found at his feet between his legs, and on searching he found a box of cartridges.  When found deceased had nothing but a white shirt and undershirt on.

The jury returned a verdict of “Death from a revolver shot”.   (source NELeader, British Library Newspaper Archives, Colindale)

In his will, Joseph Appleby, tin toy manufacturer, directed his wife Harriet to continue his business until her death, after which time it should be passed to his sons William, Henry and John with the residue of his property to be divided between his nine children.  At his death, the gross value of his personal estate was valued at £928.5.0.

Emily Appleby, born around 1858 (acc to census), married George Horne in 1878. [1878 dec Bethnal Green 1c, 563]  Emily Horne was the daughter who reported her mother’s death in 1897 (see above)

John Appleby (b 15 mar 1861, chr 4 feb 1866 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch)    Married to Charlotte Lowry (see above)

Annie Appleby (b 6 jun 1866, chr 4 feb 1866 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch) In 1891 Annie was still living with her parents,  she died on 8 jul 1899 at 28 Cambridge Circus, Bethnal Green.  She was aged 33 years and a spinster, occupation housekeeper.  The cause of death was cardiac disease, 3years and the death was reported by her sister Emily Horn of 3 Kenilworth Road, Bethnal Green (source death Certificate).  In Annie’s will, she left her effects (valued at £207.14s.4d) to her son Percy, with her brother William Appleby, tin-toy maker as sole Executor (source Last Will and Testament of Annie Appleby)

According to christening records, Joseph’s occupation was ‘tin plater’ when Joseph, Charles and Edward were born the family were living in Hoxton, when Eliza was born they were in Mary Street and when John and Anne were born they were at 36 Mill Row.                                     (source Parish Records LMA)       [check 1841, 1871 census for Appleby] – checked 1871 census on Ancestry and cannot find ANY of the above Appleby family in London

  • Samuel Appleby, 28, silk weaver, born Bethnal Green

  • Emma, 28, born Bethnal Green

  • Emma, 8, scholar

  • Walter, 6, scholar

  • George, 18, brother, bootmaker, born Bethnal Green

and a Rosina Appleby, age 26, born in Bethnal Green, was a servant in the house of Henry and Mary Kiddle (greengrocers) at 56 Wards Row, St Judes Bethnal Green.

In the 1861 census,, the Applebys were living at 11 Albion Buildings, Hackney Road in Bethnal Green [RG9253 f74] :

In the 1871 census, there is no sign of Joseph and Harriet Appleby and their family – however, there are other Appleby families who could be related - see notes at foot of page for details.

In the 1881 census, the Appleby family were living at 11 Albion Buildings:

  • Joseph, 59, born Bethnal Green, tin plate worker

  • Anne, daughter, 25, born Bethnal Green

  • Percy, 1month (grandson) born Bethnal Green [1889 jun Hampstead 1a 627]

Percy Appleby appears to be the illegitimate son of Anne; when she died in 1899 she left all her estate to Percy Appleby ‘her son or reputed son’  – in the 1901 census  Percy Appleby was living with Joseph’s daughter Emily (by this time married to George Horne)  in Kenilworth Road, Bethnal Green, when he was aged 10 and described as a nephew.  Also living with them was William Appleby, described as ‘brother-in-law’ and aged 32, a tin plate worker. Percy was the sole beneficiary of William’s will.

Percy Appleby married Agnes Eliza Gates in 1915 when he was aged 24 yrs and his father was given as John Appleby (deceased), tin plate worker. Percy and Agnes are ancestors of Tina.

A Percy Appleby was born 1892 jun Shoreditch 1c 61 [WRONG one – keep looking]
