the Mastel and Appleby families

Fourth Generation (3 x Great Grandparents)

Joseph Appleby’s father was probably Charles Appleby a wheelwright

Still looking for Joseph Appleby's birth and confirmation that his father was in fact Charles Appleby, wheelwright, as stated on Joseph's marriage certificate.  There were Applebys who were wheelwrights living in the St Pancras district in the 1841 and 1871 census – Samuel Appleby would have been born about 1800 – could he be a son of Charles Appleby wheelwright?  He died in 1869 dec Pancras 1b 28 age 72 – have copy of his will.

                                [find his birth and marriage]

Samuel Appleby was married to Elizabeth (nee Goss?) who died 1878 sep Islington 1b 214 age 77.  Their children were Samuel (born about 1825), Henry (born about 1829) and Frederick (born about 1837).

A Charles James Applebee was born about 1786 and chr 7 may 1786 at St Sepulchre, father Charles, mother Mary.                                  [check this record at Guildhall Library]

A Charles Appleby married Sarah Finch 30 jan 1831 at St Geo. The Martyr Southwark

A Charles Appleby married Mary Langon 29 Sep 1842 Old Church St Pancras

also a Charles Appleby, wheelwright appeared in 1871 census at Chelmsford, aged 85 yrs (birth date would have been about 1786) acc to census, he was born in Dedham Essex – however, he appears to have spent his entire life in Essex so is unlikely to be Joseph’s father.

In the 1871 census, the above Charles Appleby was aged 85 and living in the Almshouses at Moulsham, Chelmsford Essex (RG10/1662 f 149).  This Charles Applebee died in [1872 jun Chelmsford 4a 117] aged 86 years

William Nay

Born 10 dec 1791, chr 26 dec 1791 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch, father Francis Nay, mother Ann of Kingsland Road                                 (source Parish Records LMA

Married Ann … before 1813                    [look for marriage, perhaps at St Leonards?]

Children - all christened at St Leonard’s Shoreditch:

  • William Nay (b 13 nov 1813, chr 5 dec 1813) ( William Nay m Ann Fenn at St Dunstan’s in 1837)

  • Harriet Nay(b 10 jan 1822, chr 26 feb 1822)

  • Francis Nay  (b 22 feb 1825, chr 21 nov 1825)

  • Mary? Nay  (b 1 dec 1828, chr 25 dec 1828)

  • John Nay  (b 1 mar 1831, chr 22 mar 1831 – this John must have died)

  • Twins James and John Nay  (b 7 jul 1832, chr 30 jul 1832)

In the 1841 census, the Nay family were living at Mill Row, West Haggerston:

  • William Nay, 45, silk weaver

  • Ann, 45

  • Maria, 15

  • Harriet, 15

  • Francis, 15

  • Mary, 12

  • John, 9

  • James, 9

  • Ann, 4

And at Canal Road, West Haggerston lived:

  • William Nay, 25, silk weaver (their eldest son)

  • Ann, 28

[check for Nay family in 1851 census]

A possible younger brother or nephew of William – Thomas Nay was also a weaver in this area about the same time – he and his wife Ann had at least three children christened at St Leonard’s in Shoreditch: William John (1830), Mary Ann (1831) and Ann (1832).  However, Nay appears to be a fairly common name in the district, and there were also a lot of weavers living in this area.

(source death certificate)

Michael and Alice Lowry’s children: to date, have not been able to find baptisms of any of Michael and Alice Lowry’s children – none are listed on IGI.  have checked records for St Martin in the Fields and also Roman Catholic baptismal records at Westminster Archives.  From census information, the following is a list of their (probable) children –

He was married at least twice, his first marriage was to Mary Ann Ratlidge (presumably before Charlotte’s birth in 1839) On Charlotte’s birth certificate in 1839, Colwell Waggett’s occupation was given as shoemaker; at the time of her marriage to Francis Lowry, his occupation was described as Shoemaker (journeyman).

Ann and John Mason’s son James John Mason built the Globe Wernicke factory in Stratford Ontario where young Walter Francis (John) Appleby was supposed to be going to work when he travelled to Canada in 1913. He is an ancester of DW. (note: have checked baptisms at St George in the East from oct 1815 to 1826, but no sign of Ann Waggett)
