Eliza’s father’s name was Michael Misson, glassman.  One of the witnesses was Mary Misson (?mother or sister), the other was John Hillard  (source Marriage Certificate)

After his first wife Eliza died in 1862, Joseph remarried on 10 aug 1862 to Sarah Skeets at the Parish Church in Hackney. According to the marriage certificate, Joseph was a widower, occ gas fitter, of Railway Place, father Isaac Snary, copper smith.  Sarah Skeets was of full age, spinster of London Fields, father William Skeets distiller.  The witnesses were William Skeets and Ellen Harper. (source Marriage Certificate – J&JS)

Eliza married Joseph Snary in 1837 in Horfield, Glos

Eliza Snary died on 13 Jan 1867 at 16 Mary Street, Bromley by Bow, Middlesex, aged 43 years.  She was the wife of Joseph Snary, gas fitter and the cause of death was Dropsy, certified.  The death was reported by I Snary, in attendance, also of 16 Mary Street. Children of Joseph and Eliza Snary:

Mary Ann Snary (chr 4 mar 1838 at St P&J )   (source parish records J&JS) Married to James Gwyther [1859 sep Bristol 6a, 80]., in 1871 Mary and James were living in Russell Town with five children and Eliza Snary her younger sister.

Joseph Michael Snary, chr 8 sep 1839 at St P&J) (source parish records J&JS) – this Joseph must have died (a Joseph Snary died [1841 mar Clifton 11,262].

Isaac Snary (born 1841 jun quarter) (source J&JS) married Hannah Barr on 8 June 1862 and was living in Stratford le Bow in 1871,1891 and 1901 census – see below). Joseph died age 66 in 1907 [sep qtr, London C, 1c, 5]

Joseph Snary  (born [1843 sep Clifton 11, 285] (chr 7 apr 1844 at St Philip & Jacob, Bristol) (source parish records J&JS) married Ellen Hayes in 1865 in Stepney, and they had nine children. Ellen died in the March quarter 1882; Joseph later had a child , John Robert, to Sarah Sophia Snary (formerly Read) on 3 Nov 1883 [birth cert] but we can find no evidence of a marriage [look for marriage] . Sarah Sophia was married previously to James Sanders [1872 jun Shoreditch 1c 379] James Sanders died in [1882 mar Hackney 1b 416].  Joseph Snary must have died before 1901, as Sophia Sarah Read was a widow in the 1901 census, living in Edmonton.   Joseph Snary died age 51 [1894 sep Edmonton, 3a, 151]; Sophia Sarah Read was a widow in the 1901 census, living in Edmonton, and she died age 65 [1921 jun, Edmonton, 3a, 354]  (source J&JS)

Henry Snary (born 6 dec 1847, chr 26 dec 1847 at St Philip & Jacob, Bristol (source parish records J&JS) married to Eliza – see above

Alfred Snary (born ~1851 in London)  though in the 1891 census he appears as a labourer living in Stratford le Bow, married to Eliza and with six children but he gives his place of birth as Bristol  (source J&JS)

Frederick Snary (born ~1853 in London) may have been a ‘boy under detention’ in 1871 census.  In the 1891 census, he appears to be living in West Ham married to Jane, but he too gives his place of birth as Bristol.

John Snary (chr 2 mar 1856 at St Philip & Jacob, Bristol ) (source parish records J&JS) John married Louisa Morgan in 1875 [1875 sep Bristol, 6a, 129] and they had six children

  • Joseph Snary, 25, tinman, born Bristol

  • Eliza, 25

  • Mary, 3

  • Isaac, 4 days

It seems that daughter Mary Snary was counted twice, as she also appears at the household of her grandparents, Michael and Mary Missen (see next generation).

In the 1851 census, it seems that Joseph, mar and age 30, was living as a lodger in Kentish Town and working as a copper smith [HO107/1498 f527] but his wife Eliza and their three sons Isaac, Joseph and Henry were staying with her parents the Mizens, back in Bristol (see next generation). Joseph and Eliza’s daughter Mary was living with her grandparents Isaac and Harriet Snary (see next generation).

In the 1861 census, the family were living at 16 Locker St, Bromley by Bow in London [RG9/302 f78]:

Eliza died in London in 1862, and by 1871 Joseph had remarried and was living in London with three of his sons: John,  Isaac and Joseph.  Daughter Eliza was living with her married sister Mary,  but where were Henry, Alfred and Frederick?

*The surname Snary has been transcribed as ‘Ivory’

A Frederick Sneary was a ‘boy under detention’ aged 18 on the vessel ‘Cornwall’, docked at Purfleet, Essex [RG10/1653 f134] – was this Joseph’s son?

An Alfred Sanrey was an able seaman, aged 19 on the vessel ‘Affiance’, moored at Shoreham Harbour, Sussex – however his place of birth was given as Jersey, along with most of the other crew on board. [RG10/1093 f104]

By the time of the 1891 census, Joseph senior had died (in 1884) and his second wife Sarah was living at 4 Lefevre Road, Stratford le Bow:

  • Catherine Reed, housekeeper, mar, 50, dressmaker, born Kent Woolwich

Note: When Frank Ward joined the police force in 1904, his address was 38 Willow Grove, Plaistow and he named his last employer as Mr Snary – did he and Rhoda live with Isaac when then first came to London?

William Olpin

William Olpin was born in about 1832 in Bedminster (source death certificate and census info).  His father was William Olpin, a fishmonger (according to his second marriage).  [look for birth]

IGI has a William Reed Olpin christened on 23 feb 1834 at St Philip and Jacob, father William, mother Joanna.  This couple also had a son Charles William Olpin, chr 26 may 1833 at St P&J. (check parish records)

If William’s parents were William and Joanna, in the 1841 census, there is a family living at Whitehouse Place, Bedminster, which could just be William’s family (assuming their father had died and their mother had remarried to John Light)  (HO107/0368 ED12 f4):

  • John Light, 27, labourer

  • Johanna Light, 29

  • Louisa Light, 1

  • Charles Holpin, 10

  • William Holpin, 8

  • Ann Holpin, 5

NOTE: Elizabeth Olpin died in Whitehouse Place in 1861 … find out if the Olpin children were still living there in 1851.. Also (look for the marriage of John Light to Johanna, to see if she was formerly Johanna Olpin or Holpin)

By the time of the 1851 census, the Light family are living at 10 Sabine Place, St Philip & Jacob, Bristol (HO107/1954 f722):

  • John Light, head, mar, 37, waterman, b. Bristol

  • Joanna Light, wife, mar, 39, b. Bristol

  • Ann Light, dau, 15, b. Bristol

  • Louisa Light, dau, 10, b. Bristol

  • Elizabeth Light, dau, 6, b. Bristol

  • Thomas Light, son, 10m, b. Bristol

(Have they adopted Ann Holpen, or was the 1841 entry an error?)

The eldest Olpin child who appears in the 1861 census entry, born about 1848,  was married as Sarah Brooks, not Sarah Olpin, so she must have been born before William married Elizabeth. This suggests that William must have married Elizabeth Brooks after the 1851 census was taken and before their daughter Emma was born in June 1852 – have checked GRO index, but no sign of this marriage.

Elizabeth died in February 1861, and William then married Sarah Cross, on 16 Aug 1863 at St Clements Church in Bristol.  According to the marriage certificate, William was a packer of Charlotte Street, father William Olpin a fishmonger and Sarah’s father was James Cross, a chairmaker.  The witnesses were Edwin Newtton and Elizabeth Chard.  (source Marriage Certificate).  According to the certificate, William was a bachelor – perhaps he never was married to Elizabeth?

William Olpin died on 11 Jan 1874 at 14 Percy Street.  He was aged 42 years and his occupation was given as stoneware potter.  The cause of death was pneumonia, certified and the death was reported by Sarah Ellis*, present at the death, of 4 Doveton Street, Bedminster. (source death certificate)

[*Note: in the 1871 census, Sarah P Ellis, a widow aged 60, formerly a governess, was living a few streets away from the Olpins at 7 Doveton Street with her two daughters – Charlotte, aged 24 and Sarah A, aged 22 [RG10/2508 f69]

Elizabeth BROOKS (William’s first wife, mother of Eliza Olpin)

Elizabeth was born in about 1829, possibly in Bristol Redcliff.  [look for birth]

When her daughter Sarah married, she stated that her father was Edwin Brooks – however, it seems more likely that Elizabeth was the daughter of William and Betsy Brooks and was unmarried when Sarah was born.

In the 1841 census, living at Redcliff Mead Lane, St Mary Redcliff Bristol (HO107/0373/8 f14):

  • William Brooks, 45, smith, yes

  • Betsy Brooks, 40

  • Eliza, 14, app dressmaker

  • Martha, 11

  • Mary, 9

In the 1851 census, Elizabeth and her daughter Sarah are living at 22 Avon Street, Bristol Temple, with Elizabeth’s two sisters – Sarah is described as her sister (HO107/1947 ED2f p45):

  • Elizabeth Brooks, head, unm, 28, dressmaker

  • Martha Brooks, sister, 21, dressmaker

  • Mary Brooks, sister, 17, takes in plain needlework

  • Sarah Brooks, sister, 4

They were all born in Bristol Redcliff

Elizabeth Oplin (sic) died 3 Feb 1861 at 23 Whitehouse Street, Bedminster.  She was aged 32 years (source BO, Bristol Records Office) (find and order certificate)

[look for William Olpin in 1841 and 1851 census (age ~9 and ~19)]

In the 1861 census, William’s first wife Elizabeth had died, and the family were living at 23 Browns Buildings, Bedminster [RG9/1705 f6] :

  • William Olpin, head, widower, 29, potters labourer, born Bedminster

  • Sarah, dau, un, 13, trousers maker, born Bristol

  • Emma, dau, 9, scholar, born Bristol

  • Eliza, dau, 6, scholar, born Bedminster

  • William B, son, 3, scholar, born Bedminster

In the 1871 census,  he has remarried, to Sarah, and the family were  living at 14a Percy  Street, Bedminster  (RG10/2508 ED18 f65)

  • William Olpin, head, m, 38, packer born Bristol Somerset

  • Sarah, wife, m, 46, paper bag maker, born Bristol Somerset

  • William, son, 13, labourer, born Bristol Somerset

Children of William and Elizabeth Olpin:

Sarah Brooks, born [?1848 sep Clifton 11, 96] –  Sarah Brooks married a David Silway in 1867 at Bedminster.  At the time, she was aged 20 and living at Eldon Terrace.  According to the marriage certificate, her father was Edwin Brooks a labourer (source marriage certificate)[look for marriage of Edwin Brooks and Elizabeth]

Emma Olpin, born 25 Jun 1852 at Commercial Road, St Mary Redcliff, Bristol, dau of William Olpin labourer and Elizabeth Olpin formerly Brooks (source Birth Certificate)

Eliza Olpin, born 25 feb 1855 at Walters Place  in Bedminster, dau of William Olpin, warehouseman and Elizabeth Olpin formerly Brooks (source Birth Certificate) – she married Henry Snary (see previous generation)

William Brooks Olpin, born 26 May 1857 at 11 Waters Place, Bedminster, son of William Olpin, warehouseman and Elizabeth Olpin, formerly Brooks (source Birth Certificate)  William Brooks Olpin married in 1885 in Iron Acton to Rachel Weymouth (1858-1931).  They had a son James William Brooks Olpin, born 10 Feb 1887, died 1967 (source BO)

  • William Olpin, head, mar, 33 coachman groom, born Bedminster

  • Rachel, wife, mar, 30, born Brislington
