Third generation (great great grandparents)

Thomas Kent

Born about 1820 in Chipping Sodbury                                            [find birth]

Thomas Kent married Harriet Howse on 1st Jan 1839 at the Parish Church of St Mary Radcliff in Bristol.  Both were of ‘official age’.  Thomas Kent was a bachelor, occupation saddler, of Guinea St and his father was George Kent, painter.  Harriet Howes was a spinster also of Guinea St and her father was Emos Howes, furrier.  The witnesses were Samuel Gardner, Jessy Lavey and Samuel Harwood (source Marriage Certificate).

Thomas Kent died on 5 Aug 1892 at Colerne, he was aged 73 years and his occupation was given as ‘harness maker’.  The cause of death was age, cardiac failure (six months), hypostatic congestion of lungs (5 days), certified by Jas P Martin, MRCS.  The death was reported by Thomas Kent, son, present at death, of Colerne. In his will, Thomas Kent bequeathed his pianoforte to his daughter Asenath Tanner – not to be used at any public entertainment! He left the Organ to his son Aram and directed that all the music should be shared equally between Asenath and Aram.  He left his business and all assets to his son Thomas Kent with bequests of Ten Pounds to each surviving child – his deceased daughter Emily’s share to be divided equally between her children. Harriet Howes

Born about 1819 in Siston, father Enos Howes.                             [find birth]

Harriet Kent died on 9 May 1887 at Colerne, aged 70 years.  She was given as the wife of Thomas Kent, a Saddler.  The cause of death was Fibrous Tumour of the Uterus, 25 years, peritonitis 5 days, certified by Algn Ludlow MRCS and the death was reported by G J Kent, granddaughter of Ford, who was present at the death.  (source Death Certificate)

Three of their children, Aram, Mary Ann and Asenath were living at the Fox and Hounds (see above).

In the 1881 census, the family were living at Rose Cottage in Colerne, Wilts [RG11/2030 f5] – Mary Ann was in Bristol with her married sister Emily (see above):

  • Georgina J Kent, grandau, 22, housekeeper, born North Wraxall, Wilts (this is Jesse’s daughter)

In the 1901 census, Thomas and Harriet’s son, also Thomas, is living in High Street, Colerne [RG13/1917 f12]:

  • Annie Bashett, mar, 56, housekeeper, born Trowbridge

  • William Bashett, boarder, 17, school teacher, born Bath Somerset

In December 1894, this Thomas Kent was elected to the first Parish Council of Colerne (source The Village on the Hill 1995, Colerne History Group, edsJoyce and John Utting)

Jesse Scuse Kent, [1840 sept Cirencester, XI 239]  chr 15 jul 1840 at Marshfield, father Thomas Kent, sadler, mother Harriett (source jim).  Married to Eliza and was publican at the White Hart Inn, Ford near Castle Combe for more than ten years – then returned to Marshfield to work as a saddler.

Mary Ann Kent (chr 5 Feb 1843 at Marshfield, father Thomas Kent, sadler mother Harriott (source jim)   – mother of Frank Ward, see previous generation.  Died aged 44 yrs in 1887.

Aram Kent [1844 dec Chippenham 8, 296] chr 25 dec 1844 Colerne.  Married to Amelia Louise Strong, by 1901 was working as a saddler.

Henry Kent [1846 jun Cirencester 11, 269] chr 2 aug 1846 Colerne.  Henry was a carpenter, married to Mary and was living in Sonning in 1881.

Emily Aquila Kent [1848 jun Chippenham, 8, 327] chr 4 jun 1848 Colerne.  Married to Kennedy Brown. Died 1885.

Edward Jeason Kent chr 31 March 1850  Colerne

Asenath Kent, born about 1853, chr 23 dec 1855 Colerne.  Married to William Tanner a farmer from Box.

Thomas Kent, chr 23 dec 1855 Colerne   He was also a saddler in Colerne.                                            [check parish records]

By the time of the 1891 census, Emily Aquila (Kent) Brown had died (in the June quarter of 1885 in Bristol) and her husband Kennedy Brown was a widower, living in Redcliffe St Mary, Bristol with their children, Emily Brown (14), Mary (10), Hugh (10) and Jessie (8)

Aram has married Amelia Strong and is living at 19 Brooklyn Road, Walcot:
