George Kent

According to IGI, a George Kent was born about 1786 in Chipping Sodbury, father Thomas Kent mother Hannah.

George Kent married Mary Thompson in Chipping Sodbury on 13 May 1816 – both were ‘of this parish’ (source Bishops Transcripts, SoG) (check parish record)

A George Kent died 1859 jun Gloucester 6a, 150 - WRONG ONE [keep looking]

Mary Thompson

According to census info, Mary Thompson was born in Chipping Sodbury in about 1791 and she died after  1861 (find birth and death)

In the 1841 census, at Hounds Lane in Chipping Sodbury, lived  [HO107/0357 f29]:

  • Mary Kent, 45, shopkeeper, born in district

  • Edward, 10, born in district

(but no sign of George or Ann)  However, at Rock House in Old Sodbury, there was living  [HO107/0357 f26] :

  • Susan Tisdale, 47, independent means, born Ireland

  • George Kent, 47, male servant, born Glos

  • Henry Kent, 13, labourer, born Glos

  • Ann Bowyer, 25, female servant, born Glos

  • Ann Ore, 27, female servant, born Glos

(was this Mary's husband, and was Henry another son of the Kents?)

In the 1851 census, the Kents were living at High Street, Chipping Sodbury:

In the 1861 census, George had died, but his widow was living at High Street, Chipping Sodbury [RG9/1743 f121]:

Enos Howes (father of Harriet Howes)

According to the death certificate and census information, Enos Howes was born in about 1788 in Mangotsfield – we believe he was one of 11 children of Robert Howes and Anne (Maggs).  Both the Howes and Maggs families were involved in the hat trade, centred around the warrens of Winterbourne, Siston and Mangotsfield.

Enos Howes’ first marriage was to Mary Scuse on 18 jul 1815 at Bristol – Mary died on 15 apr 1829 (source CH)

Enos Howes  second marriage was to Sarah Jones on 21 apr 1834 at Temple, Bristol (check parish record to see if he was a widow)

Enos' occupation was either innkeeper or furrier – both trades carried on by his sons.  According to www.bristolslostpubs.com, Enos Howes was the publican at the Brass Knocker in Meadow St, St Paul's Bristol in 1834.

Enos Howes died on 25 jul 1870 at 28 Gloucester Lane, St Philip and Jacob, Bristol.  He was aged 85 years and his occupation was a furrier.  The Cause of death was chronic paralysis, exhaustion, certified and was reported by Enos Howes (his son?) present at the death, of 78 West Street, Bristol. Mary Scuse (first wife of Enos Howes)

Mary Scuse was born about 1793 and married to Enos in 1815.  She was buried 15 Apr 1829 in Bristol.

Sarah Jones (second wife of Enos Howes)

Born about 1800 in Stogumber, Somerset (according to 1861 census). A Sarah Jones was chr 8 nov 1801 at Over Stowey, Somerset – father Richard Jones mother Sarah (IGI) note: Over Stowey is about 5 miles from Stogumber.

Married to Enos in 1834.

Sarah Howes died age 74 on 8 May 1874 at Lawfords Street, St Philip and Jacob, Bristol.  She was described as the widow of Enos Howes, furrier and the cause of death was Decay of Nature, certified.  The death was reported by Enos Howes of 78 West Street, Bristol, present at the death. Known children of Enos Howes and his first wife (name unknown):

William Howes, born about 1818 in Siston, was an innkeeper (source 1871 census, visiting the Kents) William was married to Eliza (b. in Plymouth) and they had two daughters Eliza born about 1836 and Ellen born about 1845.

Harriet Howes, born about 1819 in Siston (source census) Married to Thomas Kent (see previous generation)

Aram Howes,  born about 1821 in Glos (source 1841 census) married 1848 to Elizabeth Edwards at Horfield (IGI). In 1851 census, the couple were living in St Philip and Jacob, Bristol age 26 and 25 and Aram was a journeyman furrier [HO107/1954 f387]

Jesse Howes, born about 1826 in Bilton, Glos (source 1851 census).  In 1841 census Jesse was a blacksmith’s apprentice, in 1851 he was a furrier living with father, in 1861 he is a fur cutter living with wife Ann, in 1871 he was a fur cutter, married to Ann.

Enos Howes, born about  1842 (source 1861 census)(Enos Howes reported the death of his father Enos in 1870 and his mother Sarah in 1874 –  according to IGI, this Enos was married to an Eleanor and they had a son, also Enos Colston Howes, baptised at St Philip and Jacob in 1874).  In the 1871 census, Enos was a fruiterer and he and Eleanor and their children were living at 78 West Street, Bristol.

Note: Cloisters Farm: In the early part of the 19th century this was known as "Warren House" and was occupied by Jason Howes. Cloisters and little Cloisters lie below Hicks Common; Cloisters Common ran down to the River Frome and was called "Cloisters Rivulett". It was also known as "Claysters" probably so called owing to the stiff nature of the soil. John Wadham when Lord of the Manor claimed the rabbit warren on Cloisters Common. In lieu of this he was granted six acres of land on the east side of the river Frome, by the Commissioners under the Enclosure Act in 1831.
