Some useful general links:
Sources for all families:
- 1841, 1851, 1861 and some 1871 census accessed on
microfilm at Family Records Centre, London
- 1841 London census accessed on CD pack from
S&N British Data Archive Ltd
- 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census accessed
on-line from www.ancestry.co.uk, www.familysearch.org
and www.census.pro.gov.uk - in
all cases, I have checked the actual image of the folio rather than relying
on transcripts (which I have found to be pretty poorly transcribed in many
cases!)
- GRO index information accessed on-line at
either www.ancestry.co.uk or www.1837online.com
or www.freeBMD.rootsweb.com -
before ordering copies of any certificates from the GRO references given,
you are STRONGLY advised to double check the reference at 1837 online, as
some were pretty illegible
- Copies of Birth, Marriage and Death
certificates (where indicated) obtained from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
- if you are a family member and would like a scanned copy of any of these
emailed to you, just contact me.
- Copies of Wills have been obtained either
online (for pre-1858 probate dates) at http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk//
or for post-1858 from The Court Service (Principal Registry of the Family
Division) in Holborn (tel +44(0)20 7947 6000 for opening hours).
- A big thank you to Sheila and Campbell, whose
enthusiasm for researching their family was so infectious, and to Lynne,
whose birthday present of the Legacy Family Tree software got me
sufficiently organised to be able to produce these pages.

recollections and detailed information about our shared ancestors - thank
you Diane

which in turn led to the discovery of the Gorton's Canadian links.
